Social data from space

Social data from space seminar

UCL Institute for Global Prosperity seminar

4 December 2025, 4:30pm to 6:00pm

Traditionally, the study of social systems has relied on bespoke data infrastructures such as censuses, surveys, and manual collection of fine grained geospatial data. Although these are relevant and important, can their value proposition be augmented by combining (and, in some instances, replacing) them with observations derived from satellite data?

Join the UCL Institute for Global Prosperity for ‘Social Data from Space as the Choice of “First Resort”’, a Director’s Seminar with Dani Arribas-Bel, Professor in Geographic Data Science at the University of Liverpool, and co-director of Imago, our Imagery Data Service.

Imago’s mission is to make satellite imagery useful, usable and used across the social sciences, health, and policy.

The service brings together expertise from across the UK and US, including Newcastle University, the University of Liverpool, University of Manchester and Harvard University. The team is built of researchers, research software engineers and professional services.
