A network of data infrastructure programmes
Smart Data Research UK is part of the UKRI Infrastructure Fund.
This strategic fund supports the facilities, equipment and resources that are essential for researchers and innovators to do ground-breaking work. It helps to create a long-term pipeline of research and innovation infrastructure investment priorities for the next 10-20 years. It supports multiple projects from new infrastructures to major upgrades, delivering a step change in infrastructure capability and capacity.
The fund spans the complete disciplinary spectrum. It funds infrastructures across all of the UK’s regions and nations and those forming part of major international collaborations.
Other data infrastructure programmes include:
ADR UK
A major investment by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), ADR UK (Administrative Data Research UK) is a UK-wide partnership transforming the wealth of public sector data into research assets and policy-relevant insights. Ensuring data provided by UK government bodies is accessible to researchers in a safe and secure form. Enabling better informed policy decisions that improve lives.

CLOSER
CLOSER, the home of longitudinal research, is the interdisciplinary partnership of leading social and biomedical longitudinal population studies. We are based at the UCL Social Research Institute (SRI). Our vision is for longitudinal population studies to be at the heart of research, policies, and practices that create a more equal, sustainable, healthy, and functional global society.
DARE UK
DARE UK (Data and Analytics Research Environments UK) is a programme that aims to establish a safe and collaborative network of Trusted Research Environments (TREs) where approved researchers can efficiently access and analyse sensitive data to advance research for public benefit. By co-creating this network with relevant communities and the public, we aim to enhance research while maintaining the security and confidentiality of sensitive data.

HDR UK
Health Data Research UK (HDR UK) is a joint investment led by the Medical Research Council (MRC), together with the National Institute for Health Research (England), the Chief Scientist Office (Scotland), Health and Care Research Wales, Health and Social Care Research and Development Division (Public Health Agency, Northern Ireland), the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, ESRC the British Heart Foundation and Wellcome.

Population Research UK
Population Research UK (PRUK) is an initiative dedicated to unlocking the potential of the UK’s longitudinal population studies across social, economic, and biomedical research. Home to an unparalleled collection of longitudinal population studies, tracking individuals over time to provide rich insights into their lives, health, and environments.

UK Data Archive
Home to the UK’s largest collection of social, economic and population data for over 50 years, the UK Data Archive provides researchers with training, support and data access. Based at the University of Essex, the archive is the lead partner of the UK Data Service. It provides a Trusted Digital Repository for national data resources.

UK Data Service
The UK Data Service is the principal repository for economic, population, and social research data in the UK. As hosts of the largest trusted digital archive of its kind, its expertise in the collection, preservation, and dissemination of quality data is the culmination of nearly 60 years of sustained investment by the ESRC in the UK’s research data infrastructure.
