Dr Alessia Calafiore

Dr Alessia Calafiore is a Lecturer in Sustainability and Urban Data Science at the Edinburgh Futures Institute and the Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, University of Edinburgh. She is also an investigator at the Geographic Data Service, co-lead of the CAHSS Research Theme: Future Cities, and co-organiser of EdinbR.

Alessia’s research sits at the intersection of urban planning, geography and computer science. She is interested in developing new spatially informed computational methods to better understand how human behaviour relates to its urban context. Her work combines traditional and new forms of data to provide quantifiable evidence of urban dynamics, with the aim of informing policy. Her substantive focus is on how sustainability transitions in cities can be managed equitably, and she is currently leading research on gender differences in urban mobility to support more inclusive transport planning.

Previously, Alessia was a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Geographic Data Science Lab, University of Liverpool. She holds a PhD in Computer Science awarded jointly by the University of Torino and the University of Luxembourg. She has also been a member of ENERGIC, the European Network Exploring Research into Geospatial Information Crowdsourcing, which focused on software and methodologies for harnessing geographic information from the crowd.
