Dr Riza Batista-Navarro is Senior Lecturer in Text Mining at the Department of Computer Science of the University of Manchester. She leads the Artificial Intelligence and Text Mining for Social Good at the ARTEMIS) Research Lab.
Riza holds a PhD degree in Computer Science with specialisation in Text Mining. In her work, she focuses on the development of natural language processing methods for information extraction, explainable text classification and language modelling. She has led a number of interdisciplinary text mining projects, in which she developed computational approaches together with collaborators from various domains such as biomedicine, sustainability and online safety. Her more recently funded projects have focussed on the development of novel text mining methods with applications to the environmental sciences, the legal sector and political sciences, including a British Council-funded fellowship programme for early-career researchers, an Innovate UK Accelerated Knowledge Transfer project on language models for analysing legal communications, and the Smart Data Research UK accelerator project DIGISURVOR which aims to support open research by linking digital footprint data with survey data.
