Alex is a Professor of Methodology and Social Data Science in the Social Statistics department at the University of Manchester, specialising in the collection and analysis of longitudinal data.
His research focuses on improving data quality through advanced statistical models—such as structural equation modelling, latent class analysis, and item response theory—applied to data over time. He also works with new forms of data, including digital traces and administrative records, exploring how to integrate and validate diverse sources to generate better insights.
Professor Alexandru Cernat is the creator of longitudinalanalysis.com, a platform offering practical tools, training, and guidance for researchers working with longitudinal data.
Alex is part of the DIGISURVOR accelerator team led by Professor Rachel Gibson. Meet our other Smart Data Research UK accelerator teams.
