Cassie Smith is Director of Legal, Trust and Ethics at Health Data Research UK, where she leads the organisation’s work on legal, ethical and governance frameworks for the responsible use of health data in research and innovation. A qualified solicitor with expertise in data protection and information governance, she advises on some of the UK’s most significant health data initiatives.

Cassie works across government, academia, healthcare and industry to develop approaches that treat legal compliance, ethics and public trust as enablers of research and societal benefit rather than barriers to progress. Prior to joining Health Data Research UK, she was Senior Corporate Counsel at Amazon and trained at Dentons.
